Prof. Damien M Murphy
Group Leader

Prof. Damien Murphy obtained his degree in Chemistry from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland (1986-1990). He then studied for his PhD at the Universitá di Torino, Italy (1990-1993). He was a Postdoctorate Research Fellow, at the Instituto Superior Technico, Lisbon (1994) and later Université P. et M. Curie, Paris (1995). He moved to Cardiff University in 1996 as a Lecturer, and was promoted to Professor in 2012. He served as Manager of the National ENDOR service (1996-2003) and Secretary/Treasurer of the ESR group of the RSC (1998-2003). In July 2017 he was appointed as the Head of the School of Chemistry.

Dr. Emma Richards
Research Fellow

Dr. Emma Richards obtained her BSc(Hons) Natural Sciences degree at the University of Bath (1999 – 2003), where she was awarded the Accenture prize. She studied for her PhD at the University of Wales, Cardiff (2003-2007) and was appointed as a University Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University in April 2015.
Dr. Andrea Folli
Research Associate

Dr. Andrea Folli obtained his degree in Industrial Chemistry from the Universita' degli Studi di Milano, Italy (1998 - 2004). After a few years in industry working for Sasol (Olefins and Surfactants business unit), Andrea received his PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2007 - 2011). He then moved to the Danish Technological Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he served as the PI of a large collaborative project on Photocatalysis funded by the European Commission (2010 - 2015). Dr. Folli joined the EPR and ENDOR group at Cardiff in July 2015.
Nadine Ritterskamp
PhD Student, 2015 -
Nadine's interests lies in inorganic and physical chemistry. In the former discipline Nadine finished her Bachelor thesis and graduated in 2012. Following this event, Nadine completed her Master of Science in Chemistry at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), germany, in 2015. Shortly after her graduation Nadine started her PhD at Cardiff University, Wales, in the EPR Research group of Prof. Damien M. Murphy, where she uses advanced Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to investigate transition metal complexes.
Katherine Armstrong
PhD Student, 2015 -

Kate graduated with a 1st Class MChem degree from Cardiff University (2011-2015). Kate achieved a number of awards during her undergraduate degree, 'Best Third Year MChem Performance' and 'RSC Prize for Outstanding 4th Year MChem'. Kate is currently investigating the photocatalytic activity of Titanium dioxide, to enable the mechanistic details determination for environmentally relevant catalytic reactions I.e. NOx/VOC's degradation.
Apart from EPR, Kate's other interests include baking, playing netball and taking part in 'fun' runs.
Jacob Spencer
PhD Student, 2017 -

Jake completed his integrated Masters in Chemistry (MChem) degree at Cardiff University (2012-2016), involving a project investigating racemisation kinetics, under the supervision of Dr. Niek Buurma. Jake commenced his PhD studies in the EPR/ENDOR group in Jan. 2017, in collaboration with Johnson Matthey (Reading, UK), focussing on the investigation of Li-ion battery cathode materials, and metal adsorbents for advanced ion exchange (AIX) resins.
In his spare time, Jake enjoys live music, cooking and reading.
